Alexander Omar Smith, who goes by the name of Omar S is an old-school Detroit DJ/Producer. One of a new generation of producers putting their own unique twist on the city’s legendary techno tradition that runs deep in its cultural history. Smith is known for his raw, stripped-back approach to both creating, and marketing his music.

Omar S originally funded the distribution and production of his music through his day job at Detroit Ford motor factory, which is where he developed his love for street racing. When asked about his hobby, he explained: “Yeah, I mean, to tell you the truth, I was street-racing real hard in the 90s and then in 2001 somebody tried to carjack me. I was about to have my first child, my son. And I said man, fuck this. I’m stopping. So I stopped. And that’s when I started releasing music.” And it may be the best thing to have ever happened to him.
