Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi better known by his stage name Kid Cudi, is a hugely talented American rapper, singer, songwriter. Cudi is widely recognised as an influence on multiple contemporary hip hop and alternative acts, however, it was his latest act that has really set him apart from others. On the 10th April 2021, the multi-talented hitmaker took to the stage on Saturday Night Live to perform his single ‘Sad People’, albeit with a slight quirk.
Kid Cudi appeared on screen whilst wearing a custom piece made by Off White designer Vigil Abloh, in the form of a floral print sundress, and many people questioned why Kid Cudi did this. Some will remember that in the early 90s, Nirvana rockstar Kurt Cobain wore his girlfriend of the time, Courtney Love’s dress. Cudi wore a similar style dress as the previous week it was the late great rockstar’s birthday, but aside from this, there was a deeper message behind why Kid Cudi wished to perform in a dress.
Throughout Kurt Cobain’s career, he suffered heavily from addiction and mental health issues that led to him committing suicide in 1994, Cudi dressing like Cobain is paying tribute to Cobain as a fashion icon, but also shining a light on addiction and depression.
